It has been a massive week in the US this week as Trump re-entered office and the oligarchs of the country are groveling at his feet. TikTok got banned in the US but then came back thanks to the new president and many people have raised concerns over banned kindle books becoming unavailable to purchase. This concern is not entirely unfounded, as Audible and Kindle platforms recently removed 1984 by George Orwell from users’ accounts. In addition, many Kindle-exclusive books face penalties for being pirated and shared elsewhere. Because all of this is culminating now, I’ve made a switch to Kobo. Kobo is a Canadian subsidiary based out of Toronto of a Japanese company, Rakuten. Because of that, I’m able to support other writers and have more confidence in my books being accessible. Why not buy the physical books? I’m a chaotic reader and my disability makes it hard to carry around the 8 books I’m reading at a time around. Ebooks have been a massive benefit to me as a disabled person and I don’t trust Kindle right now. I have a handful of authors only available on kindle that I will continue to support but I’m looking to get new books including 1984 on Kobo. There has also been the controversy of stuff your kindle days getting people removed from accounts that does not help this discussion. While my decision is personal, there are some of my reasons. Maybe some of those reasons can help provide a context for other readers to make a more informed decision for themselves. If there are elements I haven’t considered, leave them in the comments to let us all know and consider them.
